How to review a peptide certificate of analysis

A practical framework for connecting identity, purity, specification, and batch references before procurement.

A certificate of analysis is most useful when it can be tied to the exact material, specification, and batch being offered. A polished document without traceable references should not replace a structured review.

Start with document identity

Check the material name, catalog or internal reference, batch number, test date, release date, and the identity of the issuing or testing organization. These fields should agree with the label, quotation, and other analytical files supplied for the same batch.

  • Material and format match the requested item
  • Batch reference is consistent across every file
  • Test and release dates are plausible
  • Issuer and testing role are clearly stated

Separate identity from purity

Purity and identity answer different questions. HPLC commonly supports a purity profile, while mass spectrometry supports molecular identity. A complete review considers both the reported result and the method used to obtain it.

The acceptance specification should be agreed before quotation or release. A result cannot be evaluated properly if the target specification is undefined.

Request the supporting record set

For qualified B2B programs, the COA can be reviewed together with the chromatogram, mass-spectrum support, label artwork, and applicable handling documentation. The goal is a coherent batch record, not a collection of unrelated files.

Project-specific review matters.

Specifications, documentation, facility roles, logistics, and destination requirements should be confirmed for the exact material and order under discussion.
